LEGO news from Brickset
Designer insight: Leon Pijnenburg
Designer insight: Leon Pijnenburg

Many LEGO set designers use our BrickLists feature to maintain a list of the sets they've worked on and often provide interesting insights about their involvement.

Once a week we publish an entry from one of their lists on the home page to increase awareness of this information and to encourage more designers to create them.

Leon Pijnenburg wrote this about their work on 71361 Character Pack Series 1 - Complete:

I am actually part of the LEGO City design team, but I helped out on a handful of the LEGO Super Mario sets. There were already concepts for most if not all of these characters, which together with Alice G. (who is highly skilled at this sort of stuff) I then turned into final products. I especially love the deco for Paragoomba's suspicious face, which like the rest of the graphics was done by Andre S.

Mimic Dice Box GWP returns!

6510865 Dungeons & Dragons Mimic Dice Box has unexpectedly returned to LEGO.com, free with the purchase of 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale.

This set quickly ran out of stock when the Ideas set was released in April, so it may not last for long this time either. In theory, however, this promotion will continue until the 28th of July.

Review: 10338 Bumblebee
Review: 10338 Bumblebee

The launch of 10302 Optimus Prime was highly anticipated in 2022, as the Autobot leader looks exceptional in LEGO form and demonstrates the obvious potential of LEGO Transformers. 10338 Bumblebee follows this year, as the ideal model to accompany Optimus Prime.

Even though Bumblebee is significantly smaller than Prime, the transformation is very complex. That is a strength in certain respects because some clever building techniques are required, although it also seems liable to create problems, particularly for Bumblebee's vehicle mode and articulation.

Interview with Graham E. Hancock, author of LEGO Star Wars: The Force of Creativity
Interview with Graham E. Hancock, author of LEGO Star Wars: The Force of Creativity

5008878 LEGO Star Wars: The Force of Creativity will be released tomorrow, providing plenty of behind-the-scenes information and interesting anecdotes about the development of LEGO Star Wars.

Shortly after reviewing the book in April, I had a chance to speak with its author, Graham E. Hancock, pictured speaking with Design Master Henrik Andersen, about how the book was created and his experience interviewing so many people related to LEGO Star Wars.

Brickset: How did the book come about and how did you become involved?

Graham: I was contacted about working on a book for the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars some time into its development, so I am not exactly sure where the idea originated. It was really exciting to be asked though because I could immediately see the potential of a book intended for adult fans. DK does a great job with the LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary and other LEGO Star Wars books, but to work on something specifically for adults was an incredible opportunity for deeper insights into the brand.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of new information in the book, so how much influence did you have over its content?

I was very happy with the level of freedom and support from the publisher. My initial response to their email was quite short, just saying that I was interested. Then I went to the gym and could not stop thinking about potential content, so the structure of the book really crystalised quickly over the course of a couple of hours. As soon as I got home, I sent another email describing exactly what I thought we should do.

Review: 76934 Ferrari F40

75890 Ferrari F40 Competizione was produced among the last six-wide Speed Champions cars, before the range swapped to a larger scale. The original design was quite impressive for its size, although the bigger 76934 Ferrari F40 appears even better.

The proportions of the vehicle are undoubtedly much-improved and the level of detail is remarkable, without relying too heavily on stickers. However, there are a couple of issues to be noted, focused primarily around the windscreen and the cockpit.

Review: 21350 Jaws

Jaws is often discussed among the greatest films ever made, known for its iconic theatrical poster and score, as well as countless memorable lines and scenes. LEGO has considered the possibility of sets based on Jaws before, such as a potential BrickHeadz model in 2020.

However, the natural choice is a minifigure-scale rendition of Quint's boat, the Orca, which 21350 Jaws delivers! The model includes stunning detail and the accompanying shark looks superb as well, presented on a diorama base. Also, the essential minifigures are provided and the price seems reasonable too.

Review: 40705 Micro NINJAGO City Gardens

71741 NINJAGO City Gardens is my favourite of the NINJAGO City range, featuring an attractive combination of colourful buildings. That should translate neatly to a microscale design, as even subtler details are easily highlighted with areas of vibrant colour.

40705 Micro NINJAGO City Gardens is certainly very detailed and shows incredible attention to the minifigure-scale model, as expected for the microscale series.

This was the largest set for which I was tasked to design the build during my internship in the Ninjago team. I thoroughly enjoyed designing this set as it brought back happy memories of building my LEGO Castle and Knights Kingdom sets as a child. The model features an obstacle-ridden, stepping stone path strewn with lava, leading to the villain's hideout. Play functions include an exploding stepping stone and a lowering cage.

Five minifigure-scale models of the Desert Skiff have been produced, becoming more complex and detailed over time. The monstrous Sarlacc has also received multiple updates and superb renditions of both appear in 75396 Desert Skiff & Sarlacc Pit.

The Sarlacc in particular is bigger and probably better than ever, while detail on the skiff has improved. Additionally, the minifigure selection is excellent, providing the essential characters from this scene, plus the exclusive Nien Nunb. However, as is often the case, the price is a point of concern.

Review: 42172 McLaren P1

Previous models in the Technic ultimate car series have been based on current vehicles, usually the flagship of the vehicle manufacturers' lineup.

42172 McLaren P1 is different in this regard because the P1, the first in McLaren Automotive's own 'ultimate series' of cars, was introduced in 2013 and discontinued in 2015.

It is therefore perhaps an unexpected choice to represent the British carmaker in the series, although there's no doubt it's a good-looking and iconic vehicle, and its styling and curves look to be particularly well suited to being recreated with Technic panels.
